Catchy title, huh? Let me explain…
A lot of business owners I talk to think..”if you build it, they will come”. I am obviously referring to the line from the movie Field of Dreams. Unfortunately, this does not work with a website, a blog, a Facebook page, a YouTube video or any other online marketing. I thought it was this way when I got started years ago, but I was wrong. I thought once I hit “publish” on my blog posts traffic would come, sadly, I was wrong.
- Have you created a website and thought traffic would just appear?
- What about blogging? You post your blog post and expect everyone to come read it? Or the SEO “guru” didn’t explain that this stuff takes time.
- Or you created a Facebook page and invite all your family and friends and only have 27 likes. You get discouraged and give up.
- You published your first YouTube video and 3 days later you have 5 views, which 3 of them came from you.
I know, I have been there before. I have been doing online marketing for 3+ years and it took awhile for me to grasp this concept. PP – patience and persistence (Gary Vaynerchuk quote).
It Is Noisy Out There
In fact, Eric Schmidt of Google, stated that every two days we create as much information we did from the dawn of civilization up until 2003.
Let me repeat that: every two days we create as much information we did from the dawn of civilization up until 2003. “The real issue is user-generated content,” Schmidt said. He noted that pictures, instant messages, tweets all add to this.
How to Stand Out
Here are 6 things you can start doing today to be looked at as the expert in your field and rise above the noise;
Be consistent – This is very important. Like I said earlier, patience and persistence wins the race. I recommend creating a content calendar each month with content goals. If you want to write one blog post per month, sit down and map out the next three months. I suggest picking a day/time to sit down and write each week. It’s what I do and find it to be very helpful.
Be authentic – Write your blog posts for your audience. Offer solutions to their problems and be an educator. Do not hide who you are. If you’re a 57-year old internet marketer, show that and be proud.
Show your personality – Don’t skip this one. Show who you are and add some of your “flavor” in your content. Be different and give them something to remember. It doesn’t hurt to add in humor either.
Be there – If someone comments on a blog post, Facebook update, YouTube video or any of your online content — respond to them. Engage with them. Ask them if their is any other questions they have. Listen to them.
Extend the conversation – At the end of each blog post/video/article have a call to action and direct the prospect in what you want them to do next. Want them to comment on your post? Let them know that. Do you want them to subscribe to your newsletter? Ask them. Want them to call you for a free quote/consultation/coffee? Ask them. Having a call to action is very important, so don’t skip this step.
Have fun! – It is often times overlooked, but this one is extremely important. Show them that you are not only a great company to work with, but you know how to have a good time, too.
